Open Call

By Carmen D. on Tuesday, May 22nd, 2007, 7:11 am Comments

A lot of hurt and unexpressed frustration are going around.  Every time allaboutrace.com first comes up in discussion, the person I’m talking to expresses concern about the tense state of race relations in America. It seems to be an almost universal concern which cuts across racial, religious and political labels. I’d thought that quite a few people would see the whole discussion of race in 2007 as a superfluous exercise. But that’s not what I’m finding and that has been eye opening.

I strongly encourage all of you to comment freely on what you read. There is no need to hesitate here. As more people contribute to this site by posting their own stories and commenting on posts, the fuller and more useful allaboutrace.com becomes. I am actively seeking posts from a wide variety  of contributors. All points of view are welcome. I’ve had the good fortune to talk with a number of you who’ve told me colorful stories of how racial currents touch your life. Each story I’ve heard is unique and familiar at the same time. I strongly encourage you to share those stories here, so we can all get a clearer view of how racial issues impact us. I am here to help you edit your posts or flesh out ideas if you’d like.

I look forward to hearing from you soon.

Chi, If you find meaning important, is it your intention to suggest -- as your words, in fact do -- that Andrew is one who does not beleve and feel strongly about his assertions concerning race and relationships and that he enjoys talking "just to hear 'myself' talk?"

Andrew, Unlike you, I am sometimes without words. I like "kicking up some dirt," but I also like to believe and feel strongly about what I have to say about race and relationships. I don't like talking just to hear myself talk. Meaning is important to me.

Damn it Chi Chi, who gives a rats pahtooty if what
you say kicks up some dirt. You gotta turn the topsoil to plant a crop! We all have prejudices.
Its our ability to rationally interact in spite of them that not only makes us civilized but holds us together as Americans.
  • No fear. At this table, there's room for everyone. Any honest person raised in America will acknowledge at times being a little bit racist and a little bit oversensitive.

I find your column interesting and thought provoking, but sometimes I just don't know how to respond. My guess is that many of your readers are the same way. They may be afraid they'll sound super sensitive, making a lot out of nothing. And, most of all, perhaps they think they'll appear racist. I guess I feel that way often. Hang in there, we'll find courage. I think your site is a contribution to our understanding some of what goes on around us, and about us. Chi Chi
