Color Neutral Casting

Yet another intriguing issue has been raised by Angelina Jolie. This time it’s Jolie’s portrayal of Mariane Pearl in the upcoming film ’A Mighty Heart.’ Already some in the blogoshpere have dubbed Jolie’s acting a performance in blackface. They’ve got this one all wrong.

I get a little rush whenever I hear that a role originally written with a white actor* in mind has been cast with a black actor. In the world of fiction, I think the actor or actress who most distinctly captures the director’s vision for the film is the one who should be cast, without regard to color of skin. Yes, there is a paucity of meaty roles for actors of color; the myriad reasons for that I will save for a future post. And ask any actor and they’ll tell you there are very few good roles out there for anyone. On the other hand, I am still miffed that Oliver Stone cast a white actor in the role of Jason Thomas, the African-American hero who located John McLoughlin (played by Nicolas Cage) and Will Jimeno (played by Michael Pena) in the rubble of 9/11 and saved their lives. I resent the presence of the white actor because Stone’s ‘World Trade Center’ is presented as non-fiction, it is presented as a credible account of what happened. And as we move further from the actual event, this movie will be considered historically accurate. Given the reality that there are so few portrayals of African-American male heroism on the big screen; each and every one is precious.

Pearl told Jolie, ” ‘You are the only person I know who could play this role.’ I trust her and I think she understood me.” Globe and Mail Angelina Jolie’s Mighty Heart-Liam Lacey

The case with Jolie and Pearl is unique in a couple of ways. First, Mariane Pearl asked Angelina Jolie to portray her in the film.  Second, Pearl is of Afro-Cuban and Dutch ancestry and even without makeup, I think they favor each other.  As you’ll see in the clip, Jolie becomes Pearl. Yes, the make-up team has darkened Jolie’s skin and created a wig of hair coarser than her own. So what? There is nothing new or degrading here. Feature altering makeup and prosthetics are used all the time in Hollywood.  How many black actresses forgo their natural hair for long, straight weaves? Why then is that not degrading? In fact, Jolie is radiant as Pearl.

Either we stand for equal opportunity or we don’t. Halle Berry has been cast to play a white teacher.

Halle Berry has reportedly been cast in a new Dreamworks movie based on the life of Tierney Cahill, a white teacher. In Class Act, Berry will portray Cahill, the teacher from Reno, Nevada who was challenged by her sixth-grade students to run for Congress in the 2000. Cahill ended up losing her bid, but won 35 per cent of the popular vote. Producers have reportedly said they wanted to cast the best actress in the part, regardless of colour. China Daily

  • "Is it silly to say we NEED BLACK ROLE MODELS of nobility? And white people NEED to see Halle being noble (instead of sexy) and not Angelina?"

It is not silly at all. But, I think we are past the point where anyone is influenced by anything on screen. CRASH had us talking as a nation for a nano-second. Black people and others of color have the money to present their own version of reality. TD Jakes and Oprah got together on a movie 'Woman thou art Loosed', Tyler Perry finances his own 'Madea' movies. John Singleton financed 'Hustle and Flow' Outside of the Oprah movie, I am not so happy with the movies that come out of self financing featuring black casts either.
  • Okay, okay, I know people talk about how the media handles stories about missing women. They tend to not care much about missing black or latino women and spend a great deal of time on missing white women.

But here is a subtle case of missing black woman syndrome. (They tend to move us out of the media when we're noble or helpless...but they play up the idea of us being sex-crazed and aggressive. What's that about?)

Is it silly to say we NEED BLACK ROLE MODELS of nobility? And white people NEED to see Halle being noble (instead of sexy) and not Angelina? Halle could have permed her hair.

If the wife had been white, would we be satisfied that a black actress was playing her? I still haven't gotten over the horrible fact that they made the hero of Ursula K LeGuin's Legend of Earthsea white when the story was about a dark-skinned tribe.

    It's just hard for me.
  • Hello Acanthus, thanks for joining the conversation. Acanthus, you may want to read the post again, more closely. There was no mention or intimation of 'mass outrage.' I chose to link one post as as example of the kind of debate going on here in the blogosphere. If you google, you will find at least a dozen other examples.

This site deals with all kinds of issues related to race in America. Some of the issues are intense and over arching. Sometimes we simply tell stories. Sometimes we share a laugh. Please take a moment to check out the 'First Time Readers' page to see more about where I'm coming from.

As an African American woman who's spent a lot of time working in the world of television, the issue of casting is important to me.

Where is this mass outrage among blacks about Jolie playing a "black" woman? You give us one link to someone who disagrees. In any case, this is not an important issue, at least not to anyone who is not interested in baiting black people. Sorry. I'm not taking the bait.

ec,...you should answer every one of those letters:
thank the people for noticing you..
inform them you like food as much as the next guy..
ask them to expend their efforts with letters to the producers and directors praising your performance so that you will have the opportunity for other roles.
It isn't IF you bitch about a situation...its HOW

I'm an Asian actress and this subject always makes me a little uncomfortable. I know that I've booked acting roles because of my race and I also know I've missed out on even more roles because of my race.

Most recently I played a role as a gold digger. Some people wrote in and said they were offended that the only minority in the show played the bad girl. It really frustrated me because there was also another female role portraying 'the other woman,' but there was no mention of her character being offensive. Hmmm...it's frustrating!

Of course in certain roles, race is definitely important and can't be overlooked. So for me, it really depends on the character and story. I think in the case of 'A Mighty Heart' I'm fine with a caucasian actress in the role (especially b/c she's sensitive to the body language, mannerisms and accent of Pearl). Ultimately, I want to see who can best capture the true spirit of the character and the script.

Pearl told Jolie that she was her first choice. Done deal as far as I am concerned. She is mixed so either someone black plays her or someone white or someone mixed but the fact that shes sees herself in Jolie more than any other actress says it all. Maybe she sees herself as being more white than black.

By the way, I had no interest in viewing Jolie's new feature until you wrote about it.You should charge a fee for even mentioning it.

I sure would like to disagree with you sometimes, but it is really difficult.I suppose there will be a controversial topic in which I'll disagree with you, but I can see what you see and get it. Can't wait to see Jolie's film.Love what you're doing in your blog!
