At 25 I was much more Irish about it and I have the scars to prove it. Fortunately, I eventually learned to take the long view and skip the confrontation. I do think that being self employed almost my entire life and never in a corporate or other group work situation also allowed me to do it my way. Oh, I have collaborated, but never capitulated. The first thing out of my mouth when someone puts me on the spot like your lawyer, or the woman curious about the cell phone call you received, or the salesperson at Borders is, "Why did you ask me that?" Or, "What are you saying to me? I don't understand." Or, "Do you ask that of all of your writers?" Even though past experience has taught you what's behind their words, you must make them stop and perhaps think. It is amazing how people don't stop to think about what just jumped out of their mouths. You put the spotlight on them. I know very well how to put people in their place and I have a large number of clients who rely on me {tradesman in tech area}. Rather than tell them off I agree emphatically with whatever they say even though it might be quite abusive, but when they call me needing something fixed desperately the next time, I don't answer the phone or if they corner me in person I admit I am on the way to another emergency {usually I am}. So the answer is say NOTHING and after that find someone to take their place. I can't remember ever in my life {I only tried when I was much younger} gaining anything from engaging stupid or oblivious people. I consider their comments a gift as I find out early that I want nothing to do with them. As to race, being white and having black, white and brown kids I have zero tolerance for bigotry. But again, I say nothing and ever after avoid that person. I do get the last laugh, but unfortunately, it's often not a funny situation.
