Disney does Dumb

Dumbfounded? So was I when I first saw this. My next clear thought was that the late Walt Disney, a reported Nazi sympathizer, is probably doing a little jig somewhere having a good belly laugh.

Lead paint isn’t the only element that can make our children’s playthings harmful or destructive. Teaching young people that a tool of violence, and in this country racial violence, is something to be worn as a talisman of power goes beyond the pale.

You people are silly. A symbol is something that represents something; in this case it represents the movie. I could argue the other side of the coin in that hanging has been a legal form of execution used by many governments and thus the noose is a symbol of law and order. Chew on that awhile.
  • The necklace is truly distasteful, and I would suspect that it is the product of short-sighted and news-sheltered marketing team. But I would ask that when expressing distaste for symbols of death and racism as jewelry, think of items like the following (http://www.plushliving.net/rorebigchgun.html), and decide, as an instrument, which is a more appropriate target for this kind of outrage.

Is a gun necklace simply tacky, or is it a symbol of the inner-city cult of self-oppression and self destruction? I'm sure it's intended as a symbol of power in some sense.

I believe that the problem is less in the company that chooses to make this kind of garbage, but the customer base that clamours for the merchandise.

Having seen the films, I don't recall pirate characters wearing golden nooses around their necks, so the intended symbolism is lost. As a product, I'd say it fails since it does not immediately illustrate that it is a pirate-related movie symbol.

The best thing to do is to not give them your money and tell everyone (including Disney) why.

It amazes me how short sighted people are. Why don't you take some initiative and boycott Disney instead of taking the band aid solution of pulling if off the market. A noose is like all symbols - SUBJECTIVE. If that means it projects an image of racial hatred to you then so be it, but don't ruin it for less-sensitive others who may see this as an aesthetically pleasing piece of jewellery. As for the parents, STOP RELYING ON DISNEY TO RAISE YOUR CHILDREN. If you have a problem with this item, tell your kids what it is, give them an understanding of what you think this symbol means and maybe help them understand why Disney is an evil corporation. Shielding your children is one of the most harmful things you can do.

and another thing...if you go way back in history you will find that the noose was an earlier form of the death penalty. CAPITAL PUNISHMENT! It was used as punishment to criminals or those who have been found guilty of a crime in earlier times. It was also used to hang "accused witches and wizards" in the Salem Witchcraft Trials on Gallows Hill in 1692. (yes, I paid attention in history and my theatre class, also read the play The Crucible by Arthur Miller and seen the movie) So the noose is also offensive in that nature. People were killed for silly ass accusations. INNOCENT PEOPLE. Lives were cut short. People were left without mothers, fathers, sisters, brothers, wives, husbands, etc. WHOEVER CAME UP WITH THE GOLDEN NOOSE IDEA NEEDS TO BE FIRED! THAT'S ALL THERE IS TO IT. I don't want to hear no excuses...if you don't know the noose's history then your ass should not have been hired by DISNEY for marketing ideas because you are obviously dumb or a deeply disturbed and racist and non-sympathetic person. Unless, you are from another country and really don't know a thing about the noose's history that could probably be the only reason. However, I highly doubt that could be it because based on Disney's track record the person is usually pretty educated and should know more about history. They need people who would know how to appeal to the public eye for product marketing. Disney is a product and this my fine good people is not a good example of appealing to the public's eye. A NOOSE? GET REAL?! Who in the hell would want to wear something that means death, capital punishment, hate, torture and racial violence? I wouldn't wear the Nazi symbol around my neck nor would I wear a noose!

I am an African American young woman working for the Disney Company at Baltimore's ESPN Zone and I for one am pissed that they would do this. Their poor ass excuse for this RIDICULOUSLY OBVIOUS SYMBOL OF RACIAL VIOLENCE AND HATE is that they used the symbol in Pirates of the Caribbean?! I would like to say that they should not have used the symbol in the movie anyway! And as much as Disney claims to want no bad publicity (believe me they'll do anything to please a dissatisfied customer even at the expense of any "cast member" [employee])they sure have a funny way of expressing it. To say that it was an HONEST lapse of judgement would be to say that the Nazi symbol is just worn for style and fashion (A COMPLETE AND UTTER LIE!) This just makes me want to quit my job (they don't pay that well anyway). I'm not gonna lie I'm still trying to go to Disney World or Disney Land. I know what I am going to do though...I will go to work and ask to speak to the highest ranking official there and express my concerns. I will do all I can to get this very blatant hate symbol off the market. To those who think people are being too damn sensitive (NO ONE WHO HAS POSTED BEFORE ME): think about if the shoe was on the other foot. What if someone you knew and loved was a victim of the noose because of racism, sexism, sexual preference, etc. If Disney ignores peoples's attempt to get this off the market, they will be facing a lot of bad publicity, lawsuits, and evidently a boycott!

  • Dear Alex, now I understand. The answer is yes, we should move to get this noose off the market. I will do some research and make some calls tomorrow, on Monday. I will follow up on the site. Thanks for the nudge...it's time to get busy.

Here we are in the 21st century and someone will try to argue that all comments are causing people to be overly sensitive and politically correct, because it is a symbol that Disney used from the "Pirates of the Carribean"... However, the problem with that premise, is the obvious lack of regard and it doesn't take any research to know why a hangman's noose is offensive to the African American community. They should have had enough sensitivity and foresight to see this one comming...Duh!

I applaud your finding and criticizing this item. I was simply asking whether a campaign should be initiated to have Disney pull this necklace off the market? It would probably work; Disney, the corporation, cannot afford the public embarassment of distributing a symbol of hate, be it a noose or a Swastika. Quite likely, an incredibly out of touch and insensitive "Pirates" marketing group lauched this item, and neither corporate nor the pr department are aware of it. Disney would want to pull it for many reasons, with or without the context of current events. On the other hand, for the sake of discussing the risks of such a campaign, I was asking whether forcing Disney to pull the Noose Necklace might backfire, because all the press would induce racists everywhere to reproduce the necklace and indeed wear it as a talisman of power... So, here's the question again: should action be initiated?
