Kwanzaa

Today is the first day of Kwanzaa. Do Black people really know what the holiday is? Can Kwanzaa coexist with Christmas in the African American community? Does Kwanzaa conflict with Christmas? The practice of Christianity?

Can feel good black movies change America’s perceptions of black folks?

  • The question about kwanzaa. From what I've heard from Africans, kwanzaa is more akin to our thanksgiving than it is to christmas.

I don't think the folks who celebrate kwanzaa in the us are even aware of this. Some of them seem to think it's about challenging christmas and reaffirming blackness and Africa. But it's just one of many harvest festivals around the world. So in essence African-Americans who celebrate kwanzaa are kind of celebrating two thanksgivings. Which is interesting. -C
