The Wire – Final Season Starts Tonight!

By Carmen D. on Sunday, January 6th, 2008, 5:53 pm Comments

“The Wire” is my favorite television series of all time. HBO should really pay me, you know. Afterall, I am directly responsible for at least FIVE friends going out and buying the complete DVD series of seasons one through four. But it took some arm twisting. In fact, at first, a few people actually said to me that they were “afraid” to watch “The Wire.” No hyperbole here; “afraid” was the word used. I would always try to suss out what they were afraid of and I believe that fear may have been about not wanting to face questions that inevitably haunt us once we really and truly step into another person’s shoes and reflect that newly acquired perspective against our own lives. It’s gotta be that because Lord knows in terms of violence and inner city grittiness, video games, rap videos and your everyday evening news has “The Wire” beat by miles. But the games and the sordid crime headlines step to us without context. There is good or evil, never Omar.

Watch and you’ll understand.

  • Hey Teresa, welcome to the conversation. I am from Maryland, too. Silver Spring. I've spent plenty of time in B'more. Good people there for sure!
  • Teresa
I LOVE THE WIRE! IT'S BASED ON WHERE I AM FROM AND LIVE! BALTIMORE, MD. Makes me proud to be from Baltimore.
  • Yes, Tyler that's it. 'The Wire' gives me hope, too. Remember the moment last year when Dookie reaches out to the girl who cuts/attacks the other student? I swear that moment changed my life a little because I recognized that the simple moments of humanity that I see and sometimes feel like EVERYBODY else cannot see ...those moments are universal. And we are all connected and we must all help each other in whatever way we can.
  • This may be the moment I admit that this is the only show better than Buffy. I thought I'd never say that because Buffy was a brilliant, operatic, gorgeous, resonant show about humanity. The Wire, in many ways, is the anti-Buffy. Our institutions are failing and apathy and complacency are the order of the day. And yet, The Wire gives me hope. When McNulty says "what the fuck did I do?", when the camera goes in for a close-up of Bubbles, when Omar starts whistling...it's there.

    Best. show. ever.
  • Hello Sweating Through Fog, welcome to the conversation. Ooo, I watched tonight. I feel the tension tightening like a rusty coil. Can't wait for it all to pop. So glad to meet another who's "Wired!!"
  • My favorite show too - in my view the best TV show ever made.

    Enjoy!
