Golf + Noose = ?

By Carmen D. on Thursday, January 17th, 2008, 10:18 pm Comments

I imagine this place, All About Race.com, to be a spot where we can open our hearts and speak our minds to each other in ways that would be downright impossible in the whir of day-to-day life.

So I am asking for you input, in all sincerity:

golfmagnoose.jpg

What were they thinking?

I don’t understand it.

Seriously. If you find Golfweek Magazine’s choice to feature a noose on its cover, with the verbage ‘Caught in a noose Tilghman slips up and the Golf Channel can’t wriggle free,’ anything less than a big “F-CK YOU” to anyone who was offended by Tilghman’s comments in the first place, please add a comment.

Let’s start the conversation.

UPDATE: Golfweek Editor Fired!

  • First,
Jewish people are the most intelligent. They win almost 40% of the Nobel Prize's and they have a small population of only 14 million. So by far they exceed the other races in intelligence. The other races having huge numbers and such small contributions.

    Second,
IQ tests, test intellectual conformity, not creativity and originality. This would explain the Asian high IQ's. They as a people are the ultimate conformists.

In IQ tests there is typically only one answer to the problem. That problem being a social conformity to reason. But everyone knows that Genius's and all of the greatest developments in the world are not the product of conformity. Conformity never breeds creativity. We can see this in the lack of influence the Asian population has had on Science. China used to be called the "sick man" of Asia. Their population is massive and their contribution to innovation is almost nil. We can see this lack of originality in their adoptation of European philosophies, I.e. Communism.

Friedrich Nietzsche and other Philosophers have critized Asians. Nietsche used the words "Pallid osification" to describe Orientals.

    Pallid: lacking sparkle or liveliness.

Osification: The process of becoming set and inflexible in behavior, attitudes, and actions. Inflexible conformity, rigid unthinking acceptance of social conventions.

The reality is Asian people have yet to understand that laws and rules are arbitrary. Europeans make the rules and Asian's follow them.

It also doesn't make sense that Asian's are considered smart because of the fact that they have destroyed their own countries. This is due to over-population and their basic lack of enviromental understanding.

It is also common scientific fact that women who have many children are ignorant, and those who have less children are more intelligent. This has already been proven in studies. So it seems strange to say that Asians are smart when the obviousness of their backwards countries, and medieval lifestyle makes them contrary to that premise.

Europeans have the most advanced civilizations and every other race has yet to meet these levels other than the Japanese. The Japanese only being good at copying other people's inventions and making them better. Other than that their original creativity is lacking as well. They took American cars and made them better. They took the German camera and made it better. And they took German steel and made it better. Otherwise the greatest advances still come from Europeans and Jews. Other than that the Orientals have yet to produce an Einstein or a Thomas Edison.

When it comes to Black people. It makes sense that they have low intellectual comformity, I.e. IQ tests. They are far too creative to be trapped in this unoriginal form of conditioning. You can tell their creative capacity in their athletics, music, dance, and the way they talk. They by far exceed the Asiatic races in these areas. Being better singers, musicians ect. Blacks far exceed Asians in emotive expression. In all of North America there is only one or two famous high-paid Asian actors.

Reality, Europeans rule the world and they have allowed others to exist only out of desire for economic bennifet. They, (Europeans) are also the physically strongest, winning the Strongest Man competitions again and again.

The greater the conformity, the weaker the race. Thus we see the races as they are today. The wild animal being bred out of man, and the physically impotent, conformist thriving.

Otherwise "Group psychology" is the most destructive thing in the world. All these stereotypes are false when it comes to the individual. Individualism is the most important thing for this time. All countries, Religions, groups need to dissolve for man to live in peace.

I think Andre has an interesting point--a picture of an actual lynching would have woken alot of us whites up to the black pain that we didn't know was connected to this word. Of course, no one would buy that magazine and some people might cancel their subscriptions.

I really doubt though that the magazine thought much about blacks or black integration into golf at all. I wouldn't be surprised if they thought it was a great irony that now Tilghman and the station were in the noose over this incident. They were right to fire this guy since after what happened he should have had a clear awareness of the sensitivities here.

It is also interesting to read that Tiger is not black (or something to that effect above). Another reminder that black America is not a monolith, just like white America is not a monolith. The difficulty that leaves me with is where race relations end and interpersonal relations begin. Tiger treated this like an interpersonal issue. Others want to deal with it as a race issue. (As for Tilghman, I suspect we'll never know whether she was truly this naive, whether this was some kind of subconscious slip, or whether she regularly sits in private company making prejudiced comments.)

Beyond that, some threw in that MJ isn't actually black or is honorarily white. What is that? How does it happen? What does it really mean? I feel like every time I admire or appreciate a black person, another black person comes along and says that they're not really black. That is of course an exaggeration, but it does happen often and it always seems to me to deny the person some amount of freedom to be a human being first and a member of whatever race second. Not that the two are entirely separable, but there is a difference in self-definition that I guess each person is taught or chooses.
  • What Carole said. Only in stronger language. I'm making this post an addendum to a list I posted Saturday under WTF? It fits right in there.
  • What the heck were they thinking? -C
  • Hi Andre, welcome to the conversation. I'm glad you're here! Thank you for the kind words!

I understand your point completely. But the soulessness of a flying noose against a blue sky and that headline..."wriggle out?" I would have been applauding the editor's courage too if he had chosen a photographic image of an actual lynching. But.That.Would.Never.Happen. To address the controversy, Golf Magazine put a celebrated older black golfer on it's cover and wrote about the 60 year (?) fight to intergrate golf. Now that starts a conversation. I feel this editor was willing to inflame in order to gain publicity not inspire reasoned, passionate dialogue. Thanks for your comment!
  • Hi Carmen,

I'm a newbie to your site. But I'm happy I stumbled onto it. It's a well organized, hard-hitting look at the state of today's affairs. I like, I like!

Interestingly, you and I were on the same page with the initial story of Tilghman. Where we seem to veer off on different paths is when discussing the news article. Frankly, I thought it was pretty refreshing for a white editor to publish something so hard hitting. As I stated on my own blog, I think he would've accomplished even more if he had an ACTUAL picture of somebody being lynched on the cover. That would've been the uncomfortable image necessary to get whites like Tilghman (you know, the "I'm not racist. I've got a black friend" types) to see the reality about which she so carelessly joked.

What disturbed me more than anything was the fact that he was fired while she was only suspended.

Our differences on this one notwithstanding, your blog is HOT!
  • Kodiak, I hear you completely. Sadly, there is a current of self hatred and self destruction RAGING through the urban black community. But why? to speak in shorthand here, I am Team Cosby. But, how can I be Team Cosby and not fight for universal Headstart, quality schools AND quality police protection for people struggling to do the right thing in blighted communities. I cannot imagine what you've seen. And I have always had great respect for law enforcement officers. But here is an example of my questions - I did a lot of reporting in Kansas in the early 90's when the gangs from LA and Chicago were just coming in to Kansas City. Why was that invasion not stopped? My feeling was that it was not stopped because white folks felt gang/drug violence would never effect them...but as you know Kodiak, it always does. I would love to have your insight about that. Maybe my view is too simplistic, but that would be an example of how racism prevents us from doing what we need to do/doing our best (ie committing more resources to education, law enforcement and on demand drug rehab for instance) to protect all people in society. I have been thinking a lot about black on black crime. I will be writing a long post about this soon. In short, at the root of black on black crime is self hatred, ignorance and hopelessness. If you read my site, you will see that I am not about being a victim. I am miss law and order and each of us has the power to choose to do the right thing at any time. Understanding the impact of institutionalized racism does not mitigate anyone's responsiblity to get up everyday and work to make a legal way for themselves and their offspring and their community.
  • ChiChi, you and I are on the same page here. I do believe in the power of symbols and I do not think you can neutralize the symbolism of the noose. It is what it is. I will say that many white Americans have convenient amnesia when it comes to the epidemic of lynching in the country. It it easily forgotten because it did not effect them.

Kodiack, Don't you understand the difference between low-life blacks using that word on each other versus whites using that word and other expressions of hatred, oppression, torture, humiliation, and death on blacks? You've lived a lot and seen much of what most of us haven't, so, please think about what you've questioned and I think the correct answer will come to you. In a way, you have answered your own question. Words can lead ultimately to death. Answer please, don't people in the public eye have a greater responsibility than the common individual to seriously consider the impact of their expressions?
  • Hi carmen I worked as a policeman for 9 years in Kansas City and now live in Philly. I am an advocate for blacks to fight the right fight!!! What you mentioned above is correct, but does'nt stop any bullets in 2008 because these bullets are coming from blacks, not people who take pictures of NOOSES!!!. what is the difference in maybe 100 nooses still around in america verses blacks calling each other niggas 800 quadrillion times a day?..and please dont say that the word nigger cant kill!..but a picture of a noose can. Most of us have never seen a noose in real life..but tell me if there is one person in the world that hasnt heard the word "NIGGA,or NIGGER"
