There are a number of dynamic and informative sites on the web that focus on Latino issues. But a brand new site, PRESENTE.org, aims to become the preeminent powerhouse of Latino online organization and political action. From Presente.org’s announcement:
Latinos have long been a driving force behind the economy of the United States, but we have yet to speak with a unified political voice that forces our government to do right by all of us. We can?and starting today, with your help, we will.
That’s why we’re launching Presente.org. Our goal is …

I feel calmer and more confident about the path we’re on with President Barack Obama in office.
One hundred days in, our president has demonstrated exceptional leadership, focus and intelligence. These traits, combined with an inspiring work ethic and a strong presence as an engaged husband and father, have confirmed for me that President Obama is the caliber of commander-in-chief that many of us had hoped for.
Not that I agree with the president on everything. I have gnawing concerns about the speed and lack of accountability related to economic stimulus/recovery …

For the first time in CBS news polling history, a majority of both blacks and whites see improved race relations.
Fifty-nine percent of African-Americans – along with 65 percent of whites – now characterize the relationship between blacks and whites in America as “good,” according to a new CBS News/New York Times survey.
Less than a year ago, just 29 percent of blacks said race relations were good. The percentage of blacks who say race relations are bad, meanwhile, has dropped from 59 percent last July to 30 percent today.
Sixty-one percent of …

Following an earlier post about the problem of death-by-taser, some commented that extra-judicial execution was an insignificant issue because there should be more concern about black criminals killing black people than police officers killing black people. I argue that we should be concerned about both. And we need to sound alarms because those who stand on the thin blue line take an oath to protect and serve us; we the people. Officers of the law must be held to the highest standards of protocol and at the very least, officers …

The ever brilliant Kai Chang has written a post that defines the core reason why the United States needed to attend Durban II and what it means that we didn’t:
“In fact, if one wanted to denounce anti-Semitism, you know what would be a really good place to do that? How about a global anti-racism conference? Norway’s foreign minister Jonas Gahr Støre said in his speech before the assembly: “We who have made a point of defending freedom of expression cannot opt for non-attendance as a strategy, leaving the floor to …

Far be it from me to oppose a good passionate grassroots movement. Maybe I’m dating myself here, but I still remember big, huge marches and demonstrations that energized the heart and focused our nation’s gaze on high ideas – at least for the day. I support the scattered message tea partiers who have every right to take to the streets, distort history, wave their offensive signs and spout misinformation about the “inevitable” consequences of the proposed Federal tax increases.

And believe it or not, I don’t think the anti-spending battle …

I am so excited to talk with you about the next chapter for All About Race. I don’t know about you, but sometimes I get frustrated that those of us in our AAR community can’t just talk about some of the headlines or some of the stuff that happens in the comment section or just how race is impacting our daily lives. I think it’s a dimension missing from our online experience.
So I’ve taken the next step to address that. I’m launching ‘All About Race on …

One of the primary reasons I voted for Barack Obama, was my hope that any judge President Obama selects for appointment to the Supreme Court would be smart, precise thinking and equipped with a deep knowledge of our Constitution and legal precedent. I am still hopeful that that will happen. But for now, in an ironic twist, it’s unlikely that our Commander-in-Chief, whose self-identified race has certainly raised the volume in discussions of how race is lived in America, will have the opportunity to fill any Supreme slots before the …

It is good to see that law enforcement is finally taking on crystal methamphetamine as seriously as it did crack cocaine. Increased law enforcement crackdowns in conjunction with more effective alternatives to automatic prison sentences for non-violent or first time offenders has led to a shifting racial make up of drug offenders in prison.
According to the Sentencing Project, the number of blacks in prison for drug offenses is declining while the number of whites is increasing.
For the first time since crack cocaine sparked a war on drugs …

UPDATE: The US will boycott the World Conference against Racism. The Obama administration will boycott “with regret” a U.N. conference on racism next week over objectionable language in the meeting’s final document that could single out Israel for criticism and restrict free speech, the State Department said Saturday. US to boycott United Nations racism meeting – Associated Press

If the United States is sincere about re-establishing its reputation as "the" beacon of liberty and Democracy in the world, then this administration is going to have to wade into conversations that …

Did you know that April is Confederate History month? Neither did I until I went clicking around for new and interesting stories to talk about here. Not surprisingly, according to Wikipedia and the official Confederate History month website, Confederate History Month is celebrated mostly in Southern states.
Georgia’s Governor Sonny Perdue and Mississippi’s Governor Haley Barbour have both signed a proclamation designating April as Confederate History and Heritage Month for 2009 and city mayors and county commissioners will follow and; The Georgia Senate also recently passed SB Bill 27 officially …

We adults can argue all we want to. We can call each other names, denigrate each other and physically assault each other because of our differences. But you know what? Our children are listening. They see everything and they are modeling our behavior.
Some call it "bullying," but I call it emotional and physical torture. And it was school centered, emotional torture that claimed the life of 11-year-old Carl Joseph Walker Hoover last Monday. This young boy, who played football, basketball and was a Boy Scout, hanged himself when anti-gay …
