Ole Miss Klan Rally Kaput in Ten Minutes

The Mississippi Klan stirred up plenty of protest and not much else when they marched onto the University of Mississippi campus last Saturday.
OXFORD, Miss. — Wearing traditional red, black and white robes and carrying flags representing the infamous hate group, about 10 hooded members of the Ku Klux Klan protested on the Ole Miss campus Saturday.
The protest, held on the steps of Fulton Chapel, fizzled after less than 10 minutes and faced a large counter-protest from students and onlookers.
The Klan traveled to Oxford to protest Ole Miss Chancellor …

Fear of being called a RACIST…and the N-word

“Does Conservative Mean Racist,” kicked off a dynamic discussion over on twitter yesterday. If you have an account, please follow me @allaboutrace and I hope others in the All About Race community will leave their twitter accounts in the comment section here so we can rap through our tweets. Anyhow, reactions to Andrew’s post ranged from frustrated and fed up, to tempered disagreement, to full on support.
I felt some disappointment about the conclusions he reached, but I know he often feels the same about mine. Still, obviously, I am steadfast …

According to Whitehouse.gov:
The history of the relationship between America and Muslim communities is deeper and more complex than the common perception might suggest. Thomas Jefferson taught himself Arabic using his own Quran kept in his personal library, and had the first known presidential Iftaar by breaking fast with the Tunisian Ambassador at sunset. President Dwight Eisenhower attended the dedication ceremony of the Islamic Center in Washington, D.C. on June 28, 1957. President Bill Clinton issued the first presidential greeting for Ramadan, appointed the first Muslim American …

Please join me TONIGHT for All About Race on the Radio at 7pm PST/10pm EST. Tonight we have special guest Farai Chideya whose new novel “Kiss the Sky” features an alternative look at the music world from the perspective of a black punk/alternative rock songstress, Sophie Clare ‘Sky’ Lee.
I loved the book and while reading it I felt I had an insider’s backstage access to rock and roll life. Farai puts the good, the bad and all of the in between, right there on the page.
In addition to discussing …

Pioneering historian John Hope Franklin dies at 94

RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) — John Hope Franklin, a towering scholar and pioneer of African-American studies who wrote the seminal text on the black experience in the U.S. and worked on the landmark Supreme Court case that outlawed public school segregation, died Wednesday. He was 94.
…He often regarded his country like an exasperated relative, frustrated by racism’s stubborn power, yet refusing to give up. “I want to be out there on the firing line, helping, directing or doing something to try to make this …

Another young, unarmed black man has been shot and killed by a police officer. Early New Year’s Day in Oakland, Oscar Grant, a 22 year old father, held his hands up and pleaded with the arresting officers not to hurt him because he had a daughter. But once he had been wrestled down to the ground, with one officer’s knee in Grant’s neck area, a second officer stepped back, took out his gun and shot Oscar Grant the back. And then Oscar Grant was handcuffed. And then Oscar …

May peace and blessings flow to and through all of us.
Here is a song I play every morning when I wake up. I hope you enjoy it.
“It’s Yours”

Well, It’s yours
What makes you journey into the night
And take flight on a pursuit of musical bliss?
Chasing beats through ghetto streets
To a dungeonous temple left by our soul descendants
In a quest for peace, energy and light.
If you were to find this temple,
Do you have the knowledge to enter the temple?
Do you want it?
And if you had it, would you flaunt it?
Well It’s yours!”
[CHORUS]
There …

There is a whisper of melancholy weighing on my sky high happiness about Obama’s victory. California’s Proposition 8 passed and it will amend our state constitution to designate that only marriages between a man and women can be legally recognized. As of now it looks like Prop 8 passed by a few percentage points of only 5 million votes. I am disappointed in my neighbors who would choose to pour discrimination into such a foundational document.
The proposition had wide opposition from Republican Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger to President-Elect …

It’s raining here in Southern California.
Remember to be patient. If your name is not on the roster, vote provisionally.
Keep in mind that poll workers are just regular folks who really want to get it right.
No screaming at them… er … us.
Peace. Now go vote!

From a friend/observer:
“Sent: Sun, 2 Nov 2008 6:18 pm
Subject: Miami dade – insane lines
There are about 2000 people waiting in line at one polling place in North Miami.
Nine hour waits. All the long lines are in black neighborhoods.
Incredibly peaceful crowds, just waiting patiently. With kids, lawn chairs, umbrellas…. Going to local restaurants for bathrooms.
I believe there’s no early voting on Monday there.
The polls closed by 5 but those already in line could stay.”
Democracy in action. It’s been a long time since people have been this engaged and …

For the next couple of weeks, posts may be coming a little slower than usual because I am in a push to get a whole host of things accomplished offline. Volunteering, developing my business, tending to home, taking care of my body and connecting with loved ones, are all activities keeping me especially busy right now.
I’ve also found myself disconnecting more and more from the negativity swirling around. I am even more conscious that the pundits don’t define my reality. I don’t have to accept that “it’s all going to …

From Pop & Politics
A blow by blow of what happened on the floor as history was about to be made:

P+P @ The DNC: Impressions From The Roll Call:
P+P reporter Max Zimbert crackberried this to me from the floor:
It was hairy for a while with the only highlights being Arkansas and New Hampshire unanimous delegations. California passed, which is pathetic.
New Mexico started the snowball of energy by yielding to Illinois who had previously passed. At New Mexico’s yield, Illinois resumed the floor and Daley quickly yielded to New York, effectively …
